Empie Park is a special place as the home of the Althea Gibson Tennis Center which honors an unforgettable athlete and features 19 lighted tennis courts that are all open to the public. The tennis legend, Althea Gibson, attended high school in Wilmington back in 1946 and went on to make her mark in history in the late 1950’s when she became the first African-American to win Wimbledon, the French Open, the Australian Doubles and also the US OPEN.
