Portland, Oregon is a hotbed for tennis all throughout this great city and it is also included in the USTA Pacific Northwest (PNW). Established in 1904, the USTA Pacific Northwest (PNW) is one of 17 great sections of the USTA (United States Tennis Association).
The geographic area of the USTA Pacific Northwest consists of the states of Alaska, Washington, Oregon and the northern half of Idaho (above the 45th parallel). The USTA Pacific Northwest offers tennis programs, leagues and great tennis tournaments for players of all ages and ability levels. The USTA/PNW has over 25,000 individual adult and junior members and well over 200 organization members such as tennis facilities and associations.
Portland is also home to many tennis tournaments including the Adidas Open Tennis Championships. Beginning in 1913, every June (with a few exceptions), the beautiful Irvington Club hosted the exciting Portland City Championships. In 1970, the city tennis tournament was re-named the Rose Festival Tennis Tournament and that year 350 entrants made it the largest Portland city tennis tournament ever. In 2005, Adidas then took over the title sponsor.
All prize money for this fun event is raised through donations by Irvington Club members and local businesses. The tournament currently includes men’s and women’s open singles and doubles, open mixed doubles, men’s and women’s 35’s singles & doubles.
Rain or shine, the great game of tennis can be enjoyed all over in Portland on both indoor and outdoor tennis courts with over 40 tennis facilities available throughout the metro area! Portland is best known for it’s abundance of outdoor activities and there are over 10,000 acres of public parks to explore, including several tennis courts open to the public for tennis.
